GeoModeller can work with both apparent and actual foliations. Beware that the dip symbol is actually a representation of a 3D unit vector normal to the surface you are modelling called a pole vector as opposed to the traditional geological dip vector. On map view, this will have no effect because the dip vector and pole vector project indistinguishably. On any other view, including sections, this consideration matters a lot (i.e. normal foliations point “up” and reverse ones point “down”).
On a section, there are two ways to add a foliation.
- Either by clicking on the create point icon on the top left side followed by the foliation icon then click at the desired location, and fill in the details
- Or by clicking the create geology data icon and choose to associate a foliation to it
In this case, selecting an orthogonal association will allow GeoModeller to determine the orientation of the foliation automatically provided that at least two geological data points are created at that time.
The foliation will be set to define a plane orthogonal to the section and coplanar to the pair of points.
